X Plane Mirage 2000 [Extra Quality]

The aircraft was designed to replace the Mirage III and Mirage IV. The Mirage 2000 was to replace the Mirage III, and the Mirage 2000N the Mirage IV. The Mirage 2000's design was based on the Mirage III, though the Mirage 2000 has a longer fuselage and the engines were sited further back. The first 15 were planned to be produced with Rolls-Royce RB.196 engines, but production was stopped in 1981, and a second generation of 18 were to be built with the new Rolls-Royce Derwent engines.

The wing was designed to be highly manoeuvrable, with a -10° dihedral, and two spoilers, one at the root and one at the tip. The dihedral was discovered by accident by French aerodynamicist Jean-Jacques Bertu and patented in 1976. The swept wing and spoilers were designed by André Moriceau in 1981, and were patented in France in 1984. These features allowed Mirage 2000 to be highly agile when flying at low speeds. The outer wing panels were designed to be very light, but were supported by an integral-fuselage fairing. Unlike the Mirage III, the fuselage fairing is not split to allow for a large weapon bay.

It was selected in January 1980, and deliveries began in May 1982 with the first French Air Force Mirage 2000-5 entering service in April 1983. The other nations purchased the type in the 1980s and 1990s. About 275 were in service with France, Algeria, Israel, Oman and the United Arab Emirates at the start of the 2000s.
