Does she believe rape is a "big deal"? Andrea was asked this question while interviewing several women in Madurai and Tiruchirappalli, as part of the on-going study she is conducting on gender issues in southern India. However, an important shift in Andrea is that the shift is not from the idea that "men are rapists" to the idea that "women are raped". Rather she has now begun to accept that over half of all women have been raped by male partners to varying degrees, but that this is not necessarily the case for all women. Individually, of course, every woman is unique; and people can respond differently to traumatic events in their lives.
Victims are allowed to die of post-rape syndrome, and often do, because of the stigma and the lack of safety available to victims. The concept of "rape culture" has emerged in recent times, pointing out how even normalised violence against women is viewed as just another aspect of the culture that has existed for centuries.
Two questions from Wessels: People who are survivors of rape (there are many forms, especially in India, and this discussion is about rape as a violent crime) and the relatives of victims. My question is where does she see the next step(s) for this field of inquiry? That is, beyond this book, what new findings will arise from your research, and what new research questions will be raised for you to pursue in future?
Andrea answers the questions in a letter to Wessels. She also refers to recent post-doctoral research on urban survivors of severe violence in Chennai and Delhi. Some of the findings that have emerged from this study are as follows:
The three films Andrea is referring to are Anal Meley Pani Thuli, Pisasu 2, and an untitled project that is set to be released next year. Anal Meley Pani Thuli follows Madhi, a village girl who moves to Chennai with the dreams of finding new work and a good man. But her seemingly beautiful life comes crashing down when she is raped. How she overcomes this trauma and leads her life forms the plot of this Vetri Maaran production. Andrea looks at the film as one of the most important ones she has been part of. d2c66b5586
