Just beyond the horizon of the movie -- beyond the religious symbols Lee chooses to adorn his film with -- lies another order of reality. It is not the redemptive spirit of religious symbol or the clerical symbolism of middle-class conventional life. It is the extraordinary transcendent beauty of the animal kingdom.
The movie demonstrates that "you can't save your life by consuming it -- you also have to give it. To the end of time, it will belong to the fish and the birds and the meerkat, as well as to the reptiles and the whales."
The protagonist, Pi (Indian name - Ravi), is a short Asian boy who belongs to the Hindu faith, but he listens to a Christian band at a beach, makes a bet with his Hindu friend that he can make it as far as the edge of this life. He does so, because the movie says that being at the edge of life is not the end of life. I am not sure what the title of this movie means, so I ignore it. Life begets life.
This movie is the only movie where the minority movie is the majority movie. The movie is very well written. It is a tremendous achievement, an escape from the fearful narrative, and it is very moving. And it is the story of a fish and a zebra. d2c66b5586
