Nearly all of the modes are targeted at 'Entertainment' or 'Sports' subjects, which has to be the most bewildering single option in the camera's menu structure. There are mode recommendations in each sectioned subsection and pre-sets for the usual sports and 'Entertainment' topics, but these always pick the least demanding mode in any section. There's a great diversity of options in everything you would reasonably expect to find a sports or 'Entertainment' mode to cover (Running, Driving, Soccer, Riding, Horse-riding, Football, Tennis, Archery, Boxing, American Football, Gym Workouts etc etc)... as long as you've got a particular sport or subject, you can usually find the right option. It doesn't help that there are some modes where those options only apply to shooting a particular subject, such as Golf, Fishing or Hunting, so the 'Entertainment' options are pretty light-weight anyhow.
There's a new 'Movie' mode in the 554, which at least makes sense, but we found it even less helpful than the 'Entertainment' section. Perhaps it's because there's literally no work-around for this camera's video stuttering. If you want to do anything else than in-camera anamorphic compression (which is a joke in a lot of movies) there's no other way of dealing with video compression and stuttering than to shoot stills in Video, but when you stitch those together to make a video, the compression artefacts show up like a child's nightmare in 'Entertainment' mode.
The Live option however is pretty nice, though we found that it tends to select the wrong options - for example, the version we saw, which attempted to choose the best recording mode for every mode in sequence, resulted in things like Live-time-lapse, which is a very odd choice and which we couldn't find a way of changing. d2c66b5586
