This book helps the reader keep up with the rapidly changing client/server technology and understand the client, server, and network components of the architecture. He will learn how to select client/server development tools, operating system software, and database management systems. The goal of client/server computing is to migrate critical processing and database functions closer to end-users, enabling them to access information transparently within a multivendor environment.
Subject Description:This course presents the overview of client/server computing, client/server hardware andsoftware requirements, application development and production environments.Goal: To enable the students to learn the concept of client/server computingObjectives: On successful completion of the course the students should have: Understood the client/server computing techniques Understood the client/server application development and production environments

Introduction to Client Server Computing: In client server computing, the clients requests a resource and the server provides thatresource. A server may serve multiple clients at the same time while a client is in contact with only oneserver. Both the client and server usually communicate via a computer network but sometimes they mayreside in the same system.
The client server computing works with a system of request and response. The client sends a request to the server and the server responds with the desired information. The client and server should follow a common communication protocol so they can easily interact with each other. All the communication protocols are available at the application layer. A server can only accommodate a limited number of client requests at a time. So it uses a system based to priority to respond to the requests. Denial of Service attacks hindera servers ability to respond to authentic client requests by inundating it with false requests. An example of a client server computing system is a web server. It returns the web pages to the clients that requested them.
In client server computing, a server is a central node that services many client nodes. On the other hand, in a peer to peer system, the nodes collectively use their resources and communicate with each other. In client server computing the server is the one that communicates with the other nodes. In peer to peer to computing, all the nodes are equal and share data with each other directly. Client Server computing is believed to be a subcategory of the peer to peer computing.
Networks provide connectivity between client/server and the protocols that they use tocommunicate. The Internet provides connectivity between systems that function as clients, servers, orboth. Many services used on the Internet are based on client/server computing model. File TransferProtocol (FTP) for example uses client/server interactions to exchange files between systems. An FTPclient requests a file that resides on another system.
Host based processing is not true client/server computing. Rather, host based processing refers to thetraditional main frame environment in which all or virtually all of the processing is done on a centralhost. Often the user interface is through a dub terminal. Even if the user is employing a micro computer, the user`s station is generally limited to the role of a terminal emulator.
There is a spectrum of implementation that divides the work between client and server differently.Processing can be allocated in a number of ways. There are several major operations for databaseapplications. They are host based processing, server based processing, client based processing, andCooperative based processing. Two-tier client server architecture is the second type of client server computing model. It usestwo computers and one client/server system. At the early stages, client server computing it was calledtwo-tier computing model in which client is considered as data capture and validation tier and serverwas considered as data storage tire.
I consider the problem faced by Hures, both past and the present are not unique. I understand the factthat, client server computing had an huge impact on the organization but as with all new technologies, there are many confronts and questions with hard to find answers. 2b1af7f3a8
